Week 8: September 12-16

In ASL I, ASL II, Spanish I, Spanish II

Hello Families,

I hope this post finds you all well. I am very excited to share more information about the Fall Electives Showcase that will take place on Saturday October 29th from 5-8 p.m. This Showcase is not just a fundraiser for the Electives Department, but it is an opportunity for your child to “show what they know!” My Spanish classes will be singing songs in the Showcase and setting up a photo booth reflecting the Spanish holiday of Día de Los Muertos.  This important holiday in Hispanic Culture honors our loved ones that have passed. My ASL classes will be signing a song for the Showcase too. Show Choir and Dance classes will be performing and the art produced by Miss Tomasek’s classes and in my classes will be up for sale! The Advanced Culinary class of Mr. Ramos will also be serving up hors d’oeuvres.

This week, all of the Spanish Classes have continued practicing for the Electives Showcase by singing the songs that they are responsible for. Next week in the ASL classes we will begin to practice the signing of the song Remember Me from the movie Coco, also for the Showcase.

ASL 1: This week in class students completed receptive fingerspelling practice, story practice for lessons 6 and 7 and the lesson 7 practice sentences. Next week we will practice signing the song “Remember Me” from the movie Coco and begin lesson 8.

ASL 2: This week in class students completed country sentences 31-35 and lesson 37. Next week we will learn to sign the song “Remember Me” from the movie Coco and begin lesson 38.

Spanish 1: This week in class students learned how to use the ser verb with descriptions and learned how to use the gustar verb to say what they like to do and do not like to do. They learned what infinitives are (unconjugated verbs in their original form ending in -ar, -er, and -ir. They also practiced the three songs that they will be singing in the Showcase. Don’t be afraid to ask them to sing for you! Next week we will be reviewing the concepts learned in this chapter and will take the chapter exam.

Spanish 2: This week in class students worked on a stem changing verb packet. They learned how to conjugate verbs that required an o to ue stem change, an e to ie stem change and an e to i stem change. This has been challenging for them, but they seem to be understanding the process. They will turn in the packet tomorrow and if time allows, we will play Quizlet Live. We will be reviewing for the chapter exam next week and will take the exam at the end of the week.

The Spanish 1 & 2 classes received a big surprise today! They had a one hour Salsa dance lesson given by a professional ballroom dancer! Many thanks to Jutem McCollum for sharing her skills and her time with us. The students had so much fun and I saw so many smiles!

Just one more note regarding the Showcase. I will be asking Spanish 2 students to bring in five dollars next week in order to purchase supplies for an art project that we will be completing for the Showcase photo booth and for Día de los Muertos. The students will be painting ceramic skulls that will be ordered from Oriental Trading Company and I will also need to purchase some paint brushes and acrylic paint. If you happen to have any of these supplies at home that you would like to donate, they would be happily accepted.

I will be asking the Spanish 1 students to bring in donations of colored yarn for the craft that we will be doing for the Showcase. I could also use donations of hot glue sticks and hot glue guns if anyone happens to have extras laying around. We will be making Ojos de Dios which are a craft made in many Latino countries and have their origins with the Aztecs and Huichol people.

Thank you for all that you do to help your child in school and for helping to make it fun!
