Week 12: October 23-27
Hello Families. I want to thank each and everyone of you who participated in or attended the 2nd annual Electives Showcase. The Showcase was a huge success and the students who attended were very proud of themselves for their hard work and dedication. Each year our Elective Showcase is an opportunity for students who may not be in a sport or a club to shine. And shine they did. While it is sometimes difficult for some students to perform, it is our job to encourage (and I daresay) push them outside of their comfort zones where growth occurs. And in the end, a majority of students develop more confidence for it.
ASL 1: This week in class students watched the Showcase and are working on Lesson 9 which has household furniture and fixtures included in the vocabulary. Students also practiced receptive fingerspelling. Next week students will review Lessons 1-8 and complete Lesson 10.
ASL 2: This week in class students watched the Showcase and finished signing Lesson 40. They are currently working on Lesson 41. Next week students will complete review on Lessons 30-40 and begin Lesson 42.
Spanish 1: This week in class students watched the Showcase and the annual Alebrije parade which took place in Mexico City on October 21st. Students have also begun working on a vocabulary and reading packet for the movie Coco which is a Disney film about Día de los Muertos. This holiday takes place from October 31st to November 2nd in Mexico. It is not the Mexican version of Halloween, but rather a way to honor the departed. Next week, with approval, we will be watching the movie Coco. At the Electives Showcase the photo booth was set up as an Ofrenda and had the student calaveras (skulls) and alebrijes displayed. Thanks to those of you who had your photos taken with our version of Miguel and our female Catrina.
Spanish 2: This week in class students watched the Showcase and the annual Alebrije parade which took place in Mexico City on October 21st. They also read articles on the history of Día de los Muertos and completed 15 minutes of Duolingo so far. Students will begin a new chapter in the text this week, so will be building vocabulary in a Quizlet and will create a Word Wall for the new chapter. Next week they will begin to study some of the grammar associated with the new chapter including work on stem changing verbs, Indirect Object Pronouns, using gustar with nouns, and affirmative and negative words.
