Week 35: May 1-5

In ASL I, ASL II, Spanish I, Spanish II

Hello Families! I hope this post finds you all well and in good spirits. I am wishing you all a Happy Cinco de Mayo tomorrow! Students in both Spanish 1 and 2 had fun making piñatas last week! All of the piñatas are being displayed in our classroom and the piñata contest is on. Each class is voting on the best piñata in each category and the winners will have their names on the announcements and will receive extra credit points for their efforts! Tomorrow all of the Spanish students are also invited to participate in a cultural celebration during 3rd hour. Mr. Ramos and his culinary students have graciously agreed to cook a meal for the event, so many thanks to all who help!

Spanish 1: This week in class students learned about e to ie stem changing verbs. The verbs do not change stems in the nosotros (we) or vosotros (you plural in Spain). They only change their stem for the other pronouns, which if we drew a line around them would take the form of a shoe or a boot. Thus, they are sometimes called shoe verbs or boot verbs. It can be challenging for students to both change the stem of a verb and conjugate it with the correct endings, but they have been rising to the challenge! Next week students will learn phrases for comparison in Spanish.

Spanish 2: This week in class students learned how to use reflexive pronouns and reflexive verbs. These verbs reflect the action of what a person is doing for themselves. For example, afeitarse (to shave oneself), aplicarse (to apply oneself), bañarse (to bathe oneself), etc. In order to use these verbs we have to attach a pronoun to the end of an unconjugated verb or put the pronoun in front of a conjugated verb. We will complete a Quizizz over this material next week. Next week students will also learn the imperfect tense of the past to talk about their childhood.

ASL 1: This week in ASL class students completed review for Lesson 1-29 and signed Lesson 30, our final lesson for the year in ASL University. I am so proud of the students who have applied themselves to learning more than 600 words in ASL by the time they are done with Lesson 30. Way to go ASL 1 students. Next week we will continue work for the final and will be creating sentences with new words for our dream vacation.

ASL 2: This week in class students completed country sentences, reviewed lessons 31-59 and completed lesson 60. Lesson 60 is the last lesson in ASL University and with the completion of the Lesson students will have achieved a vocabulary of more than 1200 words, not including the countries and additional words that they challenged themselves to learn. Next week students will continue to review for the final and begin to study a song of their choosing to sign for credit.

Below are some of the pictures of this year’s piñatas.
